Busyness and the Business of God
We all seem to conspire against ourselves when it comes to the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We say yes to every commitment we possibly can and we try to plan extra gatherings for family and friends on top of all that. Even my children voiced the sentiment that they couldn’t wait until this was over. They just wanted a break. I image they are not alone in that feeling.
If my greatest aspiration this season is that the particular event I am attending would be over, that’s a problem. We can live like that for short periods of time. In the long run, that’s not a good place to be. So what do we do about it?
What I have been trying to do (not successfully all the time) is in the busyness of my life to remember the business of God. God’s purpose for my life is not just to check off another day on my calendar. God has greater things is store for us than simply survival. Each day, God gives us moments of eternal significance. When I’m riding with my children in the car, I can speak truth into their lives. When I am out and about I can look for opportunities to invite someone to church or speak about Christ.
Ephesians 5:15-16 teaches us: “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil.” Those verses make a great prayer in this season. Lord, help me to make the best use of my time this season!
